Kristin Lee had the opportunity to explore her budding desire to see the world when she was accepted into the 2012 Cohort of the VIH Program.  After spending six weeks in the city of Santiago in the Dominican Republic, she returned to the U.S. with a newfound love of immersing herself in cultures that challenge her to see the world from a new perspective.  She gained valuable insight into the negative impact a lack of education and resources can have on people through her work as a health promoter in impoverished communities in the Dominican Republic.  Upon her return to Pitt, Kristin joined with 4 other members of the 2012 Cohort to expand upon this knowledge and found FITTsburgh Shares, an organization that raised over 400 donations and held a health day at a local YMCA in order to educate children and promote a healthy lifestyle.  Through the VIH Program and her experiences abroad, Kristin was able to learn what it means to be a part of the global community, the Pittsburgh community and the incredible community that is the Vira Heinz Program.  Kristin is honored to have the opportunity to give back to VIH as the intern for the Fall of 2013 and she is excited to continue integrating the skills and values she learned during her time as a VIH awardee into her everyday life as she plans her next big adventure!
